Actual reason for doing double is very simple: truth serum is not effective. The most effective truth serum is combination of tiopenthal and coffeine (used by KGB for many many years), but it produces chaotic verbal diarrhea. In other words, interrogators get flow of bullshit, irrelevant delusions, lies, truths, emotional scrap and similar irrelevant information. As a result, the only way to get some structure in that flow of bullshit is to interrogate person again, using other ways, for example polygraphs or others. [--Vikšrelis]

This isn't the 1960s.

Intelligence agencies have long since switched from using those crude, semi-effective

barbituate drugs (like thiopental), to using much-more-effective anticholinergic drugs.

Of course, this fact is highly classified, but there are "leaks".

As for polygraph machines, they are laughably unreliable,

and an intelligence agency woud never rely upon them.
