A modern city before modern city - all those streets are over 2k years old, and there's even walkways!
As they say - "such is life" - You die how you live, isn't it?

Pompeii - a town near Vesuvius volcano, Naples, Mediterranean sea and... in centre of Italy and... well nevermind.

It became famous after being fully drowned by the eruption of Vesuvius and buried under the layers of pemza. It was occupied by vineyards and Italian villas, but then suddenly it was accidentally discovered & dug out.

History

79 AD. Roman Empire is okay & not collapsing. The town is liked by locals, rich people & the likes, at the peak of its existence it had 20 thousand people. Unexpectedly and suddenly, out of nowhere, the cone of rocks started to blast flames & smoke. It was so unexpected that people almost expected the end of the world. Vesuvius showed his power & covered the whole city with a 8m deep rock layer.

Some people did manage to escape, but ofc they're dead now.

History of the history

The city was discovered by accident while some people were digging a well in the 18th century. There were some riches, jewelries & other antique bullshit underground, and later a lot of caves and Indiana Jone's started to appear until 19th century, when it was started to be protected, and it was took under the control of "real" archaeologists. Most of the city was dug out and voila - city remained almost the same even before the eruption thanks to all the volcanic rocks from Vesuvius that helped to keep it the same as it was before.

Later, a good technology was discovered that helped people to recreate the bodies of victims, burnt from inside, which became like that due to previous heat - basically they would fill the bodies with gypsum, wait for it to cool down and demonstrate the bodies everywhere.
